A client and two adults

Natalie's Shared Lives Carer Story

Q. How did you find out about Shared Lives?
A. Over 19 years ago I overheard a conversation between two ladies about Shared Lives. I Googled it and straight away phoned and spoke to Jennie Andrews. Within a few days, Jennie had visited me, and my application to Shared Lives started.

Q. What attracted you to the role?
A. I was looking for a job that I could do from home and be around for my children at the same time.  I had experience working with children and adults with disabilities in other settings and had always enjoyed those roles.

Q. What support do you receive?
A. If I have any problems or queries, I can phone or email my Shared Lives supervisor, who gets back to me straight away with excellent advice and all the support I need.

Q. What are the challenges?
A. It can be full on if you have long term placements, you are dealing with a whole range of human experiences. Helping people through medical, financial, legal, and family issues which can be challenging. Working seven days a week can be full on so making time for yourself is essential.

Q. Why do you do Shared Lives?
A. Shared Lives is such a fulfilling and rewarding role, it’s more than a job to me, it’s a lifestyle. There isn’t another position where you can make such a difference to another person's life by offering them a safe, secure and happy environment. Being able to watch a person blossom by learning new skills, gaining confidence and independence, enjoying what life has to offer is so rewarding.
