Celebrating 30 Years of Support

Nearly 30 years ago, Peter moved into Thomas’s home after many difficult years of being misunderstood and moving between hospitals and placements. His poor eyesight, sensitivity to noise, and struggles with emotions were often mistaken for bad behaviour, which left him feeling isolated and unsettled.

When Peter first arrived, Thomas wasn’t sure how best to help. But over time, he began to see past the behaviours and understand Peter’s triggers. Thomas offered patience, reassurance, and support. Slowly, trust grew between them. Peter began to feel safe and rediscovered his confidence.

Together, they found joy in simple things. Peter enjoyed going to Bingo, travelling independently by bus, and exploring his interest in electronics with Thomas’s encouragement. Thomas also supported Peter in reconnecting with his family, ticking off bucket-list goals, and managing his health, helping him improve his diet and even getting to a point where he could come off his diabetes medication.

Even when situations and emotions became overwhelming, Thomas gave Peter the space to express himself, returning later for calm conversations. This patient approach helped Peter manage his feelings in healthier ways.

Now, at 80 years old, Peter affectionately calls Thomas’s home his “holiday camp.” He continues to enjoy travel, community activities, and family connections, all with Thomas’s steady support by his side. Their story shows the power of trust, understanding, and truly person-centred care.
